![]() This coolant uses a special chemistry and technology that extends the life of the corrosion inhibitor package so that it lasts for five years or 150,000 miles (whichever comes first), and is safe for all cars and light trucks (old or new). For those consumers who would feel more comfortable using a phosphate-free antifreeze, our Prestone® Extended Life 5/150 Antifreeze/Coolant is phosphate, silicate, and borate free. Prestone® Antifreeze/Coolant is completely safe for use in both foreign and domestic vehicles. Therefore, the question of phosphates is a non-issue here in North America. Typical North American coolants have contained phosphates (which is part of the corrosion inhibitor package) for many years. However, in North America we do not have this type of water problem. If you were to mix an antifreeze that contained phosphates with the type of water they have in Europe, it may produce deposits that can settle in the cooling system and promote corrosion. This issue is related to the extremely high mineral content of the water in Europe. Q: Does Prestone® Antifreeze/Coolant contain phosphates?Ī: Some European automobile manufacturers request that a phosphate-free antifreeze be used in their vehicles. Now which other products are "equivalent"? It goes on to talk about freezing protection and corrosion prevention, and to use distilled water etc. ![]() In a "NOTICE" right next to this it says:ĭo not use alcohol type antifreeze or plain water alone. Use "TOYOTA Long Life Coolant" or equivalent. Your coolant must contain ethylene-glycol type coolant for a proper corrosion protection of your engine that contains aluminum components. Use of improper coolants may damage your engine cooling system. That was prestone and distilled water, and never take the cap off.įrom page 250 of the 2001 Tundra Owner's Manual: I am not looking for extra long life, just a couple years or so.īy the way my Maxima hadn't been changed in 4 years and it too looked perfect in the radiator. I am waiting until tomorrow to put antifreez in and if Toyota red is the main opinion I just might do it. After the first fill with distilled water the fuild was water clear with no smell. However when flushing it through the thermostat housing, some milky stuff did come out. The cap had never been off and there is zero visable corrosion. Just for further info, my radiator core looked like new. I have always used prestone, but if the only problem with DEXCOOL is mixing it with other types I don't think I will have that problem. The manual says ethyline glycol anitfreeze, but in the shop manual I think it says Toyota Long life anti freeze.Ĭar and Driver had a short article on anti freeze a few years back and it seems that the organic (DEXCOOLS) are the new best thing. Now what are the opinions about Havoline? If there is any red Toyota coolant left, I will drink it. Then I drained the radiator again and filled it with distilled h20, and ran it to normal temp and repeated. Today I drained the Toyota original fill antifreeze (red), took the thermostat out and flushed the block, filled it with distilled water and ran it to normal temp.
